Scorns of slings in my slip, 2002, Sculpture for performance, Monofilament, rubber, wire, salt

Scorns of Slings in my Slip is a collaborative project with poet Edwin Torres, both a hanging sculpture inspired by his poem THE VASE OF THE UNIVERSE and a costume for Torres to wear in performance.

This exhibition started with a question: "What would it be like to step inside a poem?" - namely, somehow beyond our voices and implicit heft, rhythms and timings of our voice box. What would happen if we reversed this situation and put poetry into voluble space: Would we step into our voices? Into our bodies? Would rendering a word in an object alter how that word/object would be understood when recognized, presenting for the reader/viewer the suddenly real/read possibility of engaging the text field with new eyes?
